2016 Final Olympic Qualification Regatta - Men's Lightweight Double

Adam and I putting the work in as we race towards one of the the two remaining Olympic qualifying positions. This being my first elite regatta, I couldn't have asked for a better challenge and Rowing Celebration was there to capture the moment. Unfortunately we fell short of qualifying but the experience will be invaluable for the future.

Rowing New Zealand Media Day 2016

Just prior to departure each year Rowing New Zealand invite media to capture the Elite crews in training before they head off to do battle on the international circuit. Hamish Burson shot this of Adam and I, the 2016 Men's Elite Lightweight Double.

Hamish Burson captured this stunner a few strokes into what ended up being the roughest conditions I have ever raced in, even after 10 years in the sport. So rough my splash guard glanced off my oar after being ripped off the stern. I took home the silver 2.33 seconds behind the current World Champion in that very event, Adam Ling. Our overall times exemplified the struggle, mine being 8:42.84.

2015 World University Games - Men's Lightweight Single

This was not only my first medal at world level but it was also the first medal won by a New Zealand rower at a Universiade. The Universiade is the second largest sporting event in the world to the Olympics and this was the 28th edition. To earn the right to wear the silver medal on the podium is my greatest achievement to date.

Each year Rowing New Zealand hosts a series of winter regattas, similar to World Rowing Cups, for all the national crews to test themselves against one another and any eager club rowers still training. This was the second in the series that Matt (stroke) and I took part in during our build up to the 2014 U23 World Championships.

This was my first time competing in this age group and it was tough going just missing out on a medal to to Karl Manson, Joe Wright and Jamie Hunter. This photo was captured by my mother and gives some insight into the pain felt at the end of a race.
